I started reading to my son just as soon as I possibly could and I was rewarded with a toddler -- now a tween -- who has always loved to read and be read to. One of the books in today's "double feature" is a book that he would drag out again and again, until I could recite the words without looking at the pages. He eventually started to say the words right along with me, and then I would find him turning the pages on his own, telling himself the story in a sweet little sing-song voice. Books have always been like friends to him.
This is indeed a strange and scary time, but we can all take comfort in a story and a cuddle at the end of the day. Perhaps now, when we find ourselves at home with our children looking for ways to amuse and engage, perhaps it is the perfect time to reintroduce them to the routine of bedtime stories, whether they are 2 years old or 12! Trust me when I tell you that it will mean the world to them -- and to you.
